Day 26 Watched a sci-fi movie
I do not wish this entire blog to be about movies but 'Gravity' was a different type movie. I generally do not enjoy sci-fi movies but decided to sit through this one and I was not disappointed. Though there was hardly any storyline, it was an engaging movie that gives you glimpse of life in space. The movie emphasizes what we already know and yet it still leaves you astounded. The countless challenges that astronauts have to deal with, the amount of skills, knowledge and the resilience required from them and the beauty and frightfulness of space were all fascinating. However I thought it was a bit silly that one astronaut-Sandra Bullock was clueless on how to operate the control panels of the space craft and that by the time the fire alarm went off already half of the spacecraft was ablaze. I also found it very strange when Sandra bullock uses a fire extinguisher to jump through the atmosphere or did I get that wrong? I am making a mental note to double check on that.

I also loved the visual effects of Gravity but I think the finer points about astronauts in space has not been taken into account. However, in an interview the director of the movie was heard to be saying that he focused on humanity and human emotions for this movie. And it's not necessarily about space travel but it is about how humans survive and not give up in difficult situations. Anyway, I also feel it's a movie well done! :)
ReplyDeleteI too read an article about this movie a couple of days ago in the Time magazine. The director Alfonso Cuaron had shared some critical details about the adversities they faces when making this movie which is apparently the first film set in zero gravity. There was something interesting mentioned in the article which claimed that the movie derives much of its strengths from what it lacks. Basically it is an action-adventure but with no guns and weapons. There is no 'bad guy'. The bad guy is the space itself in all it's glorious splendor and terror. Interestingly there is hardly any dialog either and yet the viewers are fully immersed in the movie. Then, there are only two characters but still the viewers are not bored. Apparently Cuaron's trick is to wow the viewers with their own imagination making them immerse in their own emotional experience of a battle in space.
